About

What’s a computer scientist doing writing sci-fi comedies for teens? As a dad of 3 teenagers and a high school teacher of 3,160 of them, I know the challenges that teens face. Their fears, their hysterically bad judgment, and their burning need to break free of the limits they were born into—in whatever century. As a math geek with a Ph.D. in the subject, I know the science behind AI, as well as its seductive appeal to teens seeking to cut corners, a lesson my protagonist in Custom Friend learns the hard way. My goal as a children’s author is to help kids find agency in their lives amidst their foibles through the medium of laughter.

Though novels are my first love, there's almost nothing I won't write. I write rap songs to advertise musicals at my high school, then perform them over the PA to kids who can't believe I'm a CS teacher. When COVID cancelled our 2020 commencement, my principal asked me to write a grad speech on YouTube for our senior class. I write rants on the silliness of English, wondering aloud why labor force is a necessity while forced labor is a crime. My love for creativity extends to YouTube, where my mathy animations have attracted 2M views and thousands of comments from adults thanking me for helping them visualize math in a new way.

I live in Canada with my wife, our last teenager in the nest, and our mathematical pet, Helix the cat.

Und ich rede gerne auf Deutsch!
